WAGE EQUALITY

Are women discriminated against in the workplace? Express your opinion and exemplify.

  1. From my experience, qualified women may be passed over for promotions because they become pregnant or because they might become pregnant in the next future. It is also very hard to return in the work field, after the maternity leave.
Women are also more likely to be judged by their looks and how they dress. They are also discriminated against for being not pretty enough, thin enough or being too old.
Women are well known to be multi-tasking persons and sometimes irritates men. Women do have a constant and obsessive orientation towards family's well being and it's unsatisfying for the boss, especially a manager who has no family. This is why women are less willing to stay over schedule.
Wage is different indeed and I totally approve the information listened above about the human capital.
I would like to add that most women still have and believe in the long-held stereotypes of men bringing home the bacon.

    2. Great Kinga. I totally agree what you said, it`s a good point of view. I think people`s prejudices prevent them see that everyone`s equal, regardless of gender.

  2. I think women are not discriminated against men, but women give birth to a child and they have to stay home with their children and this cause maybe a difference between women and men in the work place. I think that women are perfectly capable to do any work like men do it, but women are more for the family and this is the think that can make the difference.

  3. I agree 100% with what the guy in the video said! Women are not judged on theyr looks, how they dress, the fat percentage and age..., everybody is! If I have a business where in order to generate profit I need beautiful men and women, I don't hire fat ugly ones..

  4. Nowadays the women all over the world are fighting for equality between them and the men. At work , I do not think that the women are discriminated , but is true that in the good positions, men are prefered. One of the reason is that the women will have a child and that means she would not be 100% dedicated to her job , and somehow is true. Men does not have this problem, because even if they became fathers, they are very relax knowing that their kid is with the mother. It is not available backwards at least the first year of life of our child. We all know that is rare that the father to be the househusband. Not impossible , but is very rare. In my opinion , the things will change when we will see more often fathers in the position of househusband . At the moment , the women has to decide if they prefer a career or to be mother.

  5. We can take a look on the statistic and say that men gain more then women, but this doesn't necessarily mean that it's because of discrimination. It is about job choices, and some of those jobs are paid better, some of them worse. There are many women who are career oriented, they don't even want to have children, the only thing that counts to them is their job. So, I think it comes down to each person and his/her decision. It might be harder to convince your boss that you are 100% committed to your job if you are a women, but it is not impossible. And being harder might come from the fact that the general conception is that most women want children and family. This whole discrimination thing depends on the point of view. If you want to see every decision as a discrimination, you will see it as such, if you want to see as a choice, you will see it like that. Everyone has to prove that he or she is worthy of being in a position or job, and even if it is harder doing that as a women, instead of searching for causes one should search for solutions and be goal oriented.

  6. If we look over the statistics we will see that women are more appreciated in human domains and men in real domains. It is true that there exists a little difference between women and men. I think that men are more appreciated because they aren’t so spiritual and they can put the family on the second place. I heard a situation when a woman was got out because she was pregnant. This is a very big discrimination. If she gives birth a life she must be protected not avoided. Sometime, a woman can do much more than a man.

  7. I agree with the man in the video.
Few women work as an oil driller, or as sailor, or in any risk taking job. Because, we have to admit, these are jobs for real men. And they are very well paid. Of course, I was exagerating a bit with these jobs, but this can be the reason why women as group are getting less money.
I think any manager will hire a woman instead of a man if she's capable to do the job right, and has good results.
About the situations when women are fired because they're pregnant, there are legal ways to solve these problems.

    1. Ref. to any manager hiring a woman instead of a man if she were equally capable, I heard a couple of weeks ago on TV about the case of a young woman in her mid twenties applying for a trolleybus driver position in Cluj and being rejected because she was a woman - as she had all the necessary preparation and knowledge and a lot of willingness to do that job! I met many women bus drivers in England!

    2. Well I guess that woman should sue them. I'm pretty sure she'd win, and that'll make an usefull precedent. The trolleybus operator, is it a private company? Or is it controlled by the state? That would explain a lot... I think

    3. This is what the invited lawyer also advised her. It is a state owned company.

  8. In my opinion women aren't discriminated against in their workplace because of what they expectations they have in life, I agree what the man says in the short video. And the statistics show that women who have the same experience, the same age, and the same job get almost the same money, it doesn't matter the sex.

  9. In my opinion this is not about discrimination, it is about differences like the man in the video sais too. If the way of thinking differs according to gender that doesn`t mean that women are discriminated at the workplace. For example there is no law against women working as an engineer or a man working as a makeup artist. They will be appreciated for their work not for their sex, whatever their interests are.

  10. Unfortunately, in many countries the women are still discriminated. I have read and watched on TV that this happens mainly in the poor countries from Africa, Asia, South America, where they must get married very young, have no access to a proper education; they may not work to earn some money to became independent, free. If they work, they must work hard from very young, for low wages. It happens in developed countries, too. A woman over 45, even if she is able to work can not get a proper, well paid job and sometimes is humiliated some way. As long as the people change not their mentality and the big social, economical discrepancies still exists, I think that this phenomenon will never disappear.

    1. Ionela,
it is: "as long as people DO NOT change their mentality...."

Do you know particular examples of women being harrassed in the workplace?

    2. Sorry for my mistake. And about the question I heard 3 or 4 weeks ago on TV about a police woman who was pregnant and harassed by her chief, this thing happened often although she announced the superiors and her husband. Finally, when the chief tried to approach her again she stabbed him.

  11. Definitely not!
In most cases, women are not discriminated against in the workplace, they do not deserve to be, and in some exceptions which I met this was not due to gender but to various personal reasons.
On the contrary, I believe that a woman is more valuable that a man, and I don't say that because I'm female but despide the set of responsibilities that you have as a woman you have the courage to organize your time so that you can have a job.
Related to the discussion in the video when we choose our job, gender matters. It is evident that a woman prefers to work as an accountant on the company, where she can always display their clothing.
Imagine she goes to a building site in high-heeled shoes in cold weather just because she is an engineer!
Maybe it is true that an engineer's job is not the same as an accountant's but if one takes into account the work done at home by women accountants this is above that of men engineers.
For this reason, we women prefer a job which allows us to have a time for our personal life even it is not as well paid as that of a man's.

  12. On times women were discriminated against by men .. they had to stay at home and only men to work they had to take care of the house. But over time this has changed and women work alongside men.
Some women maintain the whole family.
