Farmers in Central Kenya are obtaining loans through mobile banking in increasing numbers. Kenya's Mobile banking system is by far the most successful in the world with at least two-thirds of Kenyans use their mobile phones to pay bills, transfer money, pay salaries and now to get loans. The availability of a reliable mobile -payments platform has also spawned a host of mobile phone start-ups helping thousands who don't have bank accounts. Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi reports from Nyandarua, Kenya. YOUR TURN: 1. What do you use technology for? 2. Kenyan vs Romanian farmers - compare and contrast

  2. 1. I use technology to pay bills and to stay in contact with my friends ( on the social networks), to read news.
    2. Romanian farmers are more traditional than Kenyan farmers in a way. If you go to a farmer from the centre of Transylvania for example and you ask him about Iphone, Facebook, Tweeter, Skype or if you ask him if he pays his bills using his mobile phone he will either stare at you or just laugh. Modern Romanian farmers on the other hand keep in touch with the progress of technology and use it.

  3. I use technology to stay in contact with my family and friends, to find out the news, and to do internet transaction such as shopping online or to pay bills.
Kenyan farmers use their mobile phone to do their bank transaction; the farmers apply for a loan through a text message and in less than 48 hours they have it. In Romania farmers are more traditional, the most of them do not use the modern technology, and the rest of are using the mobile phone just to for calls. I think that younger farmers are using the modern technology, but also it is true that in our country the banking system it is not so advance like in Kenya or maybe the people do not trust so much on doing their payment through their mobile phones.

  4. 1. I use technology to read the news, watch movies, talk to friends on social networks, to buy or sell, and for make certain payments.
    2. Kenyan farmers depend heavily on technology, thanks to a systemically highly developed mobile banking, of which a Romanian farmer almost never heard of . Romanian farmers depend mostly on traditional methods, for them these are the most basic. If Kenyan farmers use their mobile phones to do banking transactions to obtain a loan, Romanian farmers use mobile phones exclusively for calls.

  7. 1. I use technology for social media (facebook, skype), online shopping, hotel and air ticket reservations, payment for bills.
    2. Kenyan farmers are well advanced and addicted to bank transactions using their mobile phones as it is faster,on the other hand for the Romanian farmers, transactions are mainly made in Cash as they only use mobile phones for messaging, phone calls and perhaps photography. Kenyan farmers use purely their mobile phones to access their bank account , whereas Romanian farmers go to the bank for any related issue they might have.

  11. To be honest i use tehnology for my own good. Like facebook and twitter. It is very useful if one of members of my fammily leaves the country. We can stay connected and know about each other. I also use tehnology to pay my bills, or to transfer money.
I have never heard of romanian farmers using tehnology. I mean, when I was little i spent my time at my grandparents and i never saw them using this new tehnology. They barely uses theire phones. I think that this tehnology can make life easier to all farmers.

  12. 1. I use technology every day, because it simplify my life. For example on the internet we can change data very fast and of course to be able to use the internet we have to have laptop or tablet or smart phones.
    2. In Kenya farmers learned how to use the mobile banking to simplify their life and to can pay bills fast and get loans fast. Sincerely don't think our farmers will know this in 2030. Romanian people still change cash and pay with cash.

  14. 1. I use technology to be constantly in contact with family and friends.
    2. As I have seen, Kenya is a relatively poor country, yet is open to new things.. to technology. For kenyan farmers technology has become the simplest way to solve problems. For romanian farmers, as Bianca says, this is a pretty bad and dangerous thing because they are too rooted in ancient culture. The only farmer I've ever seen that uses modern technology is Ghita from Vodafone advertisement :)

2 Is a good thing that the Kenyan farmers can receive loans so easily. Difference is that in Romania it needs to go to the bank and wait a long time for a loan.Besides the fact that they used mobile banking in the short movie does not seemed that Kenyan farmers to be more developed than our traditional farmers ( they milked cows by hand )

    1. Daniela, do we use "her" for "technology"?
Also, you say "YOU need" or "ONE needs" to go to the bank.

I liked your conclusion, and of course the profile photo!

  16. I technology to talk with my friends, to keep in touch with them, to pay my bills, to wake up in the morning. I use technology to arrive to work, all my life is sorrounded by tech. Even if Roumania is a poor country, we can say that is at a much higher level than Kenya. I can not say an opinion about farmers because I do not know their situation at all. But I can say that, even if in our country we still do some field works with our hands, not with machineries, we are much more advanced than Kenya.

  22. I use technology every day as I like to keep in touch whit my friends and family and I think nowadays it’s normal that more and more people have a facebook account , or twitter or something like that.
Young Romanian farmers might use the new technology but I think the old farmers would never use it because they lived in those periods when our country wasn’t so developed and people weren’t used with such things.

    2. In Romania only young farmers are interested in using technology. They think the information is very valuable in their daily activities. Older ones use traditional solutions. According to the film it seems that Kenyan farmers are more evolved in using technology, good for them. Technology in Kenya makes life safer.
