BUYING AT A DISCOUNT PRICE

Many people buy at discount prices in flea markets, second hand stores, retail outlets, and pundlands, including Martin Lewis, the British multimillionaire. Read the article on How Poundland shops make their money - then watch the YouTube clip on buying second-hand in Paris (below): Now answer the following questions: 1. How do Poundland shops manage to survive financially according to the article? 2. What is your opinion of buying in outlets, second-hand? 3. Do you know about other types of shops selling at discount prices?

  1. 1. Poundland shops buy goods cheap, stack them high and sell large volumes- they can handle large amounts of stock; when the standard rate of VAT increased to 24% the Poundland shops simply reduced the quantities they offered on some products.
    2. In my opinion, buying in outlets, second hand is a smart choice because the goods bought there might be of a better quality than other new goods.
    3. Second hand shops, charity shops.

  2. 1. The Poundland shops manage to survive financially when other companies are collapsing because they have one single price, and all products cost £1 or 99p, so the people who go and shop there know that there can not be a confusing price or misunderstanding and no price changes. For example when prices increased the Poundland shops can not increase the price, but to survive they reduce the quantities and keep the same price.
    2. I agree with the idea of buying in outlets because you can find there very nice things, that maybe you can not find it in a normal shop and even it is in outlet they have quality on the clothes.
    3. Flea Market and import second hand shop.

  4. 1. The Poundland stores manage to survive financially because they never raise their prices. Even if the V.A.T. grows, their prices stay invariable, only the quantity of certain products drops.
    2. I think that is ok to buy what you need from second hand shops because lots of their products have higher qualities than the new ones bought from other stores

  9. I have spoken about me and how i buy things I need. Now I wand to talk about people who runs for discounts. I have a neigbhour and she's a girl. She really likes to walk in second hand shops and buy clothes from there. One of the reasons she told me is that the chlotes from second hand are better than those from PPT, and DANY STYLE. She reffers at the quality and beauty of the clothes. It is true that in Mures Mall and Promenada Mall we finde quality clothes but some prices are unaccesable. So this is another strong point for second hand shops. The price.
She is a patient person, and she can spend a lot of time in this kind of shops because she wants to make sure that what she buys is in perfect condition.

  10. 1. Poundland shops survive the financially very easy, because they are a kind of second hand shop. They collect the ''rich people'' bored clothes for 0 euros what they disinfect and resale for 1-3 euros. It's simple like 2+2 because this clothes are branded and fashionable of course they will have all the time customers because of their low price.
    2. I've never bought something in second hand shop, because I don't like second hand things. If I want to buy something I buy it new or rather don't buy it. New is new.
    3. There is a lot of second hand shops in the city.

    1. Csaba, I have to disagree with you but poundland shops are not second hand or what you see in the video above. Everything is 1 pound and usually they do not sell clothes but small things, food etc.

    1. Delia, do not forget the subject, which is very important in English, unlike in Romanian. You cannot make a sentence in English without a subject:
      - so THEY have many customers....
      - the price is fixe and IT can not grow.
